Mao Yan’s painting originated from his growth environment and the widely different experiences in Beijing and Nanjing in his early years.Added in with Romanticism and Expressionism styles, his unique way of painting was then formed.Concomitantly,Mao’s development of art was filled with positive self-exploration,and criticism to the intentional describe of objective. He intentionally ignored the artificial work on the specific feature of the objective.Instead,he leveraged the blurred color and variegated light to successfully retrieve the inner emotion and feelings of his own. This paper discussed Mao’s career of painting from his childhood to the time in Nanjing.Along with that, his understanding of art was not influenced by the rapidly developing environment. He’s always focused on the portraits. He kept exploring the spirits from both inner and the times. His language of painting originated from European Classicism, based on which,he proactively express the objective’s emotion and the characteristics of the times.Mao explored deep inside his spirit via a lot of works, such as the portraits of his friends and the series of Thomas. Moreover, these works reflected the commonly observed confusion and puzzle when the artist found himself in the dramatically changing world.I’m deeply inspired by Mao for his pure chasing of the expression itself and abandonment of the restricted technics;for his retrieving of painter’s inner world and beyond the superficial reflection of the objective being painted;for his sense of getting involved in the world and times and on top of staying as an ego.
