A Study On Translator's Subjectivity Under George Steiner's Hermeneutic Motion Theory

As the executor of translation activities,the translator has long been regarded as an “invisible person”.Later,in the 1970 s,the “Cultural Turn” in Western translation studies begins to focus on the target language and culture,and the status of the translator's subjectivity comes to receive additional significance.Since then,the translator's subjectivity has gradually become the research emphasis of translation studies.On the basis of hermeneutic theory,George Steiner proposes four movements in the translation process,namely,trust,aggression,incorporation and compensation.The core of this translation motion theory is to emphasize the exertion of translator's subjectivity.When Breath Becomes Air was written by Paul Kalanithi,a famous American doctor,as well as a patient with lung cancer.Taking this book as the practice text and the fourfold translation motion theory as the guidance,this translation report analyses how the translator's subjectivity runs through the whole process of the translation.In the initial movement of trust,the author identifies with the value and significance of the original text.After trust comes aggression in which the author breaks down the language barrier and conveys the original meaning to the target readers through the intrusive aggressions on lexical items and long sentences.And in the third move—incorporation,the author incorporates the meaning and language style of the source text and chooses appropriate translation strategies in order to make the target readers get the same reading experience as the original readers.In the final movement of compensation,the author adopts a variety of compensation methods to ensure the balance between the original text and the translation version.In the process of translation,the author kept active in manifesting her subjectivity in order to make the translation faithful and readable.
