The ultimate goal of English curriculum standard for junior middle school is to cultivate students' comprehensive language application ability. However,in practical teaching, students' comprehensive ability of language use is always ignored.Luckily,as listening comprehension is included in the high school entrance examination and accounts for a certain proportion, rural English teachers also start to train students' listening skills. However,in this process, students are always asked to write down their answers to check whether they understand or not,but they are not guided to speak in English. As a result, students are not able to speak English, and their English listening skills are unable to improve obviously. In the author's opinion,English listening and speaking are inseparable.Listening test is about students' understanding of listening materials, while oral communication is about students' reaction after listening, which is a higher level of listening comprehension.Because of the poor listening and speaking skills of rural middle school students, the author carried out a one-semester action research in the eighth grade of a rural junior middle school taught by the author. This research aims to find out whether the tasks designed under the guidance of task-based language teaching approach can help rural junior high school students improve their English listening and speaking skills and how and why the tasks designed based on task-based language teaching approach can improve students' comprehensive language use in listening and speaking ability. In the process of teaching, teachers used action research to constantly reflect and improve teaching. In the action research, questionnaire survey, interview, classroom observation, test and teacher log were used to collect data.According to the results of data analysis, the tasks designed under the guidance of task-based teaching approach can help junior middle school students in rural areas to communicate with each other in English. In the process of completing the task, the students use language interactively to construct their own knowledge system and cultivate their lasting interest in learning. At the same time, this thesis also points out an implication of performing task-based teaching in English listening and speaking classroom: the tasks designed under the guidance of task-based language teaching approach are conducive to the development of students' English listening and speaking skills, which requires teachers to constantly reflect on and improve tasks in the teaching process, and pay attention to the development of students' skills at all levels.
