This translation practice material is excerpted from Genetically Engineered Food:A Self-Defense Guide for Consumers,co-edited by Ronnie Cummins and Ben Lilliston.The book presents us with a comprehensive knowledge of genetic modification in a simple way.This book consists of nine chapters.Under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory,this translation project takes the second chapter(WHAT ARE THE ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS OF GE FOOD)and the third chapter(WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL AND ETHICAL HAZARDS OF GE FOODS AND CROPS)as the source text,for English-Chinese translation practice.This translation practice report consists of four chapters,which are task description,process description,case study and summary.Chapter One mainly includes the significance and introduction of the project.Chapter Two describes the translation process,which includes pre-translation preparation,major difficulties,polishing,proofreading and revising.Chapter Three analyzes the representative cases in the translation materials based on the functional equivalence theory.This part covers various translation methods such as amplification,conversion,omission and combination.Chapter Four summarizes the translator’s experience in this translation practice,as well as the existing problems and deficiencies.
