| With widely global exchanges in all walks of life, foreign medical devices are commonly introduced in domestic market and no doubt, the translation becomes increasingly crucial in information exchanges and communication.Medical device is a multidisciplinary,knowledge-intensive and high-tech industry, with basic knowledge extending to pharmaceutical, mechanical, physical, chemical aspects. The introduction of medical devices attaches great importance to the development of medical field, therefore it is of practical significance to explore the translation in medical device texts. This report takes the E-C translation of St.Jude Pacel Clinical Evaluation Report and Testing Protocol as a case to explore techniques and methods about medical device text translation under the theoretical guidance of “three-dimensional transformations” in Hu Gengshen’s Eco-translatology.Eco-translatology is a holistic translation study that is characterized by its ecological perspectives,in which“three-dimensional transformations”,the adaptive selection of linguistic, cultural and communicative transformations, offers crucial guidance for medical device text translation. The translation report consists of four chapters, namely, project description, the process of translation, translation difficulties and solutions, translation project evaluation. In translating the medical device text Pacel Clinical Evaluation Report and Testing Protocol, the author identifies difficulties in abbreviation and sentence translation,i.e.,blending and initialism in abbreviation translation, passive voice and sentence group in sentence translation.Guided by Hu Gengshen’s “three-dimensional transformations” of Eco-translatology amid the comparison and contrast between Chinese and English, translation solutions such as semantic translation, zero translation, addition are applied to address abbreviation translation, translation techniques like word-for-word translation and voice shift are introduced for passive voice translation, and the sentential recasting is adopted in sentence group translation either by combining or dividing to rearrange those sentences in accordance with textcohesion and coherence.Upon this practice, the author concludes that Eco-translatology does make a contribution to the translation of medical device texts. All translation solutions to the difficulties are proposed in this report in hope of being helpful for translators who devote themselves to the translation in the medical field. |
