As we all know,conversation teaching plays an important role in junior middle school English teaching.The cultivation of conversation ability is also one of the main goals of English teaching in junior middle school.Therefore,constructing student-centered English conversation classroom instructional activities has become an effective means of English conversation teaching.This study chooses 200 students and 4 English teachers in Grade Seven and Grade Eight of a junior middle school in Xi’an as the participants.Through two research methods: questionnaire and classroom observation to investigate the current situation of classroom instructional activities in English conversation teaching in junior middle school.Firstly,this paper chooses two classes in Grade Seven and Grade Eight respectively of a junior middle school in Xi’an for classroom observation to observe the common forms and types of classroom instructional activities in English conversation teaching.Secondly,through questionnaire,the participation of students in classroom instructional activities in English conversation teaching is investigated,which includes students’ behavior participation,cognitive participation and emotional participation.The results show that in English conversation teaching of junior middle school,teachers often adopt various forms of classroom instructional activities.Before conversation,teachers often use vividly lead-in and brainstorming to stimulate students’ interest.In while-conversation,teachers often use a large number of output activities to guide students to understand conversation content.In post-conversation,common activities include role-play and discussion of related topics.Besides,the students’ participation in conversation classroom instructional activities of junior middle school is generally high.However,compared with behavior participation and emotional participation,students’ cognitive participation is lower,and students are accustomed to relying on teachers and peers in cognitive participation.Finally,based on the above findings,the author puts forward some suggestions for English conversation teaching in junior middle school.For example,teachers should insist on designing various conversation classroom activities.Students should pay attention to cognitive participation in conversation classroom activities and cultivate the ability of independent learning.
