For most Chinese high school students,English reading is one of the main ways to learn English.In senior high school,English reading comprehension can not only test students’ English reading ability,but also accounts for a large proportion in English examination.Therefore,English reading has become one of the most important parts of senior high school English learning.However,under the current classroom-based teaching system,the diversity of English learning levels among students is often ignored.During the teaching process in traditional class,teachers always set teaching objectives,design classroom activities and afterschool reading assignments in accordance with the average learning level of the whole class,which can only satisfy the needs of some students.Therefore,students with higher reading ability may think that the reading class is boring and lacks challenge,and those with lower reading ability may increasingly lose confidence and interest in English reading,because having reading class is difficult for them and they can’t finish the reading tasks during and after class.Stratified teaching is a type of teaching strategy which requires the teacher to divide students into different parts scientifically in accordance with their existing knowledge foundation,learning ability and potential,so that students can study efficiently.The purpose of stratified teaching is to stimulate each student’s interest and autonomy in learning,make each student get the joy of success,improve their grades of examinations,and ultimately improve the overall learning ability of the whole class.Considering the current situation and existing problems of English reading in senior high school,the author carried out an experiment of stratified teaching in senior high school English reading class.The main purpose of this experiment is to test the possible effects that stratified teaching may exert on students’ reading interest,reading autonomy and reading ability.Therefore,the experiment is designed to answer the following three questions through the application of stratified teaching in English reading class of senior high school.1.How can stratified teaching affect students’ English learning autonomy?2.How does stratified teaching affect senior high school students’ interest in English reading?3.How can stratified teaching influence senior high school student’s English reading ability?The experiment is carried out in Zhengzhou No.101 Senior High School and lasts for 3 months.The subjects of the experiment are 112 students from two classes,Class 7 and Class 11.Class 7 is taken to be the experimental class where stratified teaching method is adopted.In the meantime,Class 11 is chosen as the control class in which traditional teaching method is still in use.In order to figure out the problems in the process of students’ English reading and trace the changes of students’ interest and autonomy in English reading before and after the experiment,the author uses the method of questionnaire and interview before and after the experiment.In the meantime,the author takes testing method to find out the changes of students’ English reading ability before and after the experiment.In addition,the author collects the data of the reading part of pre-test and post-test,then makes a comparative analysis with the help of SPSS21.0.After the experiment,based on the data collected,the author comes to the following answers: Firstly,most students have mastered the reading strategies and form a good habit of reading,so the students’ learning autonomy in EC gets improved,and all the students are willing to learn English reading in class and after class;Secondly,the teacher sets different tasks and diversified reading materials for students with different levels before and after class,so stratified teaching can improve students’ interest in English reading in the experimental class and make the students develop a habit of reading English,and this effect is more visible among the students on the basic level.Thirdly,stratified teaching can improve students’ English reading scores in the experiment class,and it also helps the whole class improve the ability of English reading,especially in the aspects of reading accuracy and reading speed.
