Objective:This study is aimed to assess the clinical effect of modified YuHan Decoction on allergic rhinitis in children, explore a suitable traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)formula for children with allergic rhinitis, and provide an objective basis and a therapeutic approach for treating allergic rhinitis in children based on syndrome differentiation in TCM.Methods:A total of 60 children who visited the pediatric outpatient clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Heilongjiang University of Chinese medicine between June 2019 and December 2020 and met the diagnostic and inclusion criteria were selected. All children were randomized into treatment and control groups according to the random number table, with 30 children in each group.Children in treatment group took modified YuHan Decoction orally and those in the control took Tongqiao Biyan Capsules. The course of treatment was one month and there was a follow-up of 3 months. The changes in the total effective rate, western medicine syndrome score, and TCM syndrome score before treatment, after 2 weeks, and after 4 weeks of treatment were observed and compared between the two groups.Results:1.Overall treatment efficacy on allergic rhinitis:The effective rates of modified YuHan Decoction for treating 2 weeks and 4 weeks were 76.7%and 90.0%,respectively.Both were significantly higher than that of the control group(P<0.05),indicating that the effect was better in the treatment group.2.Western medicine syndrome score comparison:the experimental group was better than the control group in improving western medicine symptom score, with statistical difference(P<0.05).The difference was statistically significant in improving the symptoms of sneezing and runny nose(P<0.05);There was no significant difference in the symptoms of nasal congestion and itching(P>0.05).3.TCM syndrome score comparison:in improving the pallor symptoms of children, the effect of Yuhan Decoction group was significantly better than that of the control group, the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01);There was no significant difference in the symptoms of spontaneous sweating, fear of wind and cold, shortness of breath and lazy speech(P>0.05).4.Comparison in recurrence:The rate of recurrence in the treatment group was 11.2%after 3 months of the treatment, which was significantly lower than that 45.5%in the control(P<0.05).Conclusion:1.The effective rate of modified YuHan Decoction in the treatment of allergic rhinitis in children with lung deficiency and coldness pattern,is greater than that of the control group.2.The effect of modified YuHan Decoction on improvement of TCM syndrome scores, syndrome of pale face, sneezing and runny nose was significantly better than that of the control.3.Compared with children in the control group, children who took modified Yuhan Decoction had a lower recurrence rate.
