This is a Chinese-English translation report and the translation material is selected from the book The Remote Chinese Empire:A Study on the Images of China in the West which was written by Professor Zhou Ning. From two important dimensions of social imagination, utopia and ideology, this book mainly discusses the formation and change of the six kinds of Chinese images in the West from the 13 th century to the 20th century.Besides, their related causes and significance are elaborated. The translator translated Chapter Two and Chapter Three in volume I of this book.Chapter Two mainly elaborates on the transformation of the Chinese images from the legendary one to the geographic one in European culture from the 13th century to the 16th century, which was reflected in the books The Travels of Marco Polo and The History of Mighty Kingdom of China.Chapter Three focuses on the perfect and superior image of China shaped by the book The History of Mighty Kingdom of China and expounds Europe’s admiration for the Chinese political system, which is implied in the content of that book. The selected book is an academic monograph focusing on the research of crosscultural imagology.According to the features of the source text,German functionalist skopos theory is applied to guide this translation practice, and the four rules of this theory,“skopos rule, coherence rule, fidelity rule, and function plus loyalty”,are closely followed in translation.Under the guidance of these rules, the translator hopes to faithfully and smoothly convey the information of the source text, effectively guarantee the quality of the translation, and smoothly realize the academic exchanges between scholars speaking different languages,so as to reproduce the functions and academic values of the source text.Besides,in this report, difficulties and problems encountered during the process of translation practice are summarized and classified. Then, through the translator’s careful research and analysis, the corresponding solutions are given, such as the translation strategy of combination of domestication and foreignization, translation methods of back translation and paraphrase, and translation techniques of conversion and reconstruction of sentence structure. The translator also hopes that the exploration and summary of the translation practice can provide a beneficial reference for the translation of related texts in the field of imagology. The translation report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the translation task as a whole, including the overview of the book and the selected chapters for translation practice, the interpretation of translation objectives and significances, and the layout of this report. The second chapter describes the pre-translation preparation, translation process and post-translation management.Chapter Three is an introduction to the guiding theory, the functionalist skopos theory, and its applicability.Chapter Four is the main part of this report. The translator discusses the problems and difficulties encountered in translation practice and puts forward corresponding solutions through case analysis from three aspects. The first is the translation of terms. The second is the reproduction of Chinese images, including literal images, perceptual images, and conceptual images. The third is the reproduction of the stylistic features of the source text. The last chapter is the translator’s summary and reflection on the translation practice.
