The translation of foreign military texts is one of the important ways for China to obtain foreign military information. The target readers all have a clear purpose while reading—“to obtain the accurate military information”.And the accuracy of military terms’ translation directly influences our information acquisition. The Functional Skopos Theory, with the core principle of “translation strategies depending on translation purposes”,can provide us with powerful guidance for military terms’ translation.Nord, the representative of Functional Skopos Theory, put forward “Grammatical Translation” and “Annotation Translation” which are tailored to the applied texts—“military texts” aiming at faithfully recording the communicative interaction under the source culture for the target readers. Therefore, this report first discusses the development of the Functional Skopos Theory at home and abroad and the principle of term denomination.Next, with the Functional Skopos Theory as a theoretical basis,“grammatical translation” and “annotation translation” as guidance, the detailed translation strategies are developed for the unnamed military terms with various characteristics in Explosive Ordnance Disposal: Multiservice Procedures for EOD in a Joint Environment, namely—“Grammatical Translation” including Literal Translation,Screening Translation,Flexible Translation and Transferring Translation;“Annotation Translation including In-text Annotation and Post-text Annotation. It is hoped that this research can provide some reference for the future translation practice on military terms.
