| Shimen Ode,an inscription on precipices written by Wang Sheng who is prefecture chief in feudal China of Hanzhong and carved by Shu Zuo and Wang Rong on the west side of the inner wall,is a competitive cliff carving in the Han Dynasty. It is a model of peculiar and uncontrolled style of official script which was first recorded in the Northern Wei Dynasty(386A.D.— 534 A.D.),since then most researches for the engraving quality, content and other aspects.Until Yang Shoujing(1839B.C.—1915B.C.),a famous calligrapher, was highly rated these characters as wild, unrestrained, innocent and natural style, discussions on calligraphy increased gradually, mostly for sporadic, lacking systematic interpretation.Although contemporary calligraphers illustrated the inscription’s features, they seldom combine calligraphy creations to make deep systematic and reasonable interpretations.Based on those, integrating reviews of calligraphers from ancient to modern times, investigating the social and historical background of the engraving, discussing the inscription’s calligraphic characteristics from composition, structure and line, this paper concludes that Shimen Ode combines calligraphic characteristics of seal character, clerical script and cursive script. Then, the conclusions drawn from the calligraphy using, writing and composition are applied to official script creations,as a supporting evidence. Finally, presenting the combination of theory and practice,I propose my direction on calligraphy creation in the future. That is strengthening practice and understanding of line and emotion, and improving personality. |
