William Shakespeare was one of the greatest writers in the English Renaissance. In his life,he created a large number of plays and poems,of which his “great comedies” and “great tragedies” are the most prominent, and these works show a colorful world to readers. For several centuries, due to the profound thoughts and keen insights,Shakespeare?s literary works have exuded great charm, and attracted people of different generations around the world.Based on John E.Joseph?s theory of language and politics, the thesis focuses on the study of Hamlet, one of “great tragedies” of Shakespeare. It aims to explore and interpret the phenomenon of the politics of language in the work.Through the analysis of language used by the characters, the thesis aims to reveal a political world created by language. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter includes the brief introduction to Shakespeare and Hamlet, the theoretical basis of the thesis, and the structure and the significance of the thesis. The second chapter discusses the interpersonal politics embedded in language. In the play, the use of deferential pronouns, deferential addresses and puns can not only help reflect a character?s social status, but also help the speakers intercommunicate with others. For example,it can help either increase the intimacy with others,or reflect estrangement themselves from others. The third chapter explores the power politics reflected from language. The characters rely on various language skills or language functions to help them achieve their goals of dominating others or holding power. The fourth chapter explains the gender politics pervading in language. This part analyses the characteristics of male language and female language respectively and makes a comparison of them, showing the phenomenon of the male domination and female subordination in the play.At the end of the thesis,it is concluded that all characters? languages are political, and their languages create a world full of political relationships in Hamlet.
