| Reading materials in English textbooks consists of vocabulary,phrases,grammar and sentence structures.Students acquire language knowledge and language skills by learning reading materials.Choosing and making rational use of reading materials in textbooks have an important impact on students’ reading effect and teachers’ English teaching.In the previous researches,there are more comparative analysis on different editions of English textbooks in junior and senior high schools as well as Universities.Less attention is paid to the use of English textbooks in secondary vocational school.The secondary vocational school is an important part of the high school education.English course is a compulsory public basic course for students.In practical teaching,teachers and students commonly use textbooks passively.It do not give full play to teachers’ creativity,and students’ initiative in learning is not stimulated.Therefore,it is useful to make a systematic and comprehensive evaluation of the two editions of textbooks commonly used in secondary vocational schools at present.Analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of their existence can help teachers use textbooks correctly,and make textbooks serve the teaching well.This research selects two editions of English textbooks used by Qingxu Vocational School and Xinzhou Vocational School in Shanxi Province,that is,the basic module textbooks published by Language &Culture Press and Higher Education Press.This thesis attempts to answer the following questions:(1)What are the respective characteristics of reading materials in the two editions in terms of subject matter,length,genre,exercise design and grammar items?(2)How do teachers and students evaluate the reading materials in the two editions?This research will be based on the English Syllabus of Secondary Vocational Schools(2009),and combined with Cheng Xiaotang’s internal and external evaluation method to analyze two edition textbooks.The internal evaluation adopts the method of textual analysis to analyze the characteristics of reading materials in the subject matter,genre,length,exercise design and grammar of two edition textbooks.The external evaluation adopts the method of empirical investigation to conduct questionnaire and interview to some teachers and students who use two edition textbooks to understand the general views on the reading materials.The results of this research show that the reading materials in two editions meet the reading requirements of the syllabus to varying degrees.As far as the subject matter is concerned,the reading materials of two edition textbooks reflecting the diversity and interest in the choice of the subject matter.The topics are all close to the students’ life,which can attract the students’ attention.However,the topic scope of HEP textbooks have a wider range.As far as the genre is concerned,two edition of reading materials are rich and diverse,including more text types.But LCP textbooks are partial to narrative,and HEP textbooks are partial to practical.In terms of length,HEP textbooks are more reasonable.In practice design,there are many types of reading activities in two edition textbooks,but the emphasis is different.In terms of grammar,two edition textbooks reflects all kinds of grammar knowledge points required by the syllabus,highlighting many important and difficult grammar knowledge.But LCP textbooks involve more detailed and comprehensive grammar contents.On the whole,the design of LCP textbooks are close to that of ordinary high school,while HEP textbooks are more professional.Through this research,I hope to provide some suggestions for English teachers in secondary vocational schools to integrate and use textbooks to promote English teaching. |
