| The National English Curriculum Standards for High School(2017 ed.)proposes the English Learning Activity Theory(ELAT),which integrates six elements and aims at cultivating students’ core competences.And it also advocates that the language activities should be carried out in a certain thematic context.What’s more,texts carry thematic meaning,language knowledge and cultural knowledge.Therefore,text teaching is an important link to achieve curriculum objectives and cultivate students’ core competences in English.And in text teaching,teachers should not only guide students to have a literal comprehension of the text,but also gradually guide them to make inferential comprehension and critical comprehension of the text,so that students can deeply explore the thematic meaning of the text from different aspects.The teaching of Theme-based Teaching Mode is based on themes,which advocates teachers to focus on a specific theme and take the text as the carrier to guide students to explore the thematic meaning in depth.And this teaching mode could help students understand the language knowledge related to the theme and cultivate their comprehensive language skills in the process.Thus,the connotation of Theme-based Teaching Mode coincides with the teaching philosophy in the new curriculum standard.Thus,based on the new English curriculum standard,this study applies Theme-based Teaching Mode to English reading teaching of senior high school,with the purpose of exploring its effects on students’ English reading learning.And this study mainly answers three questions: 1.What are the effects of Theme-based Teaching Mode on students’ learning motivation for English reading? 2.What are the effects of Theme-based Teaching Mode on students’ English reading competence? 3.What are the effects of Theme-based Teaching Mode on students’ English reading achievement?Based on the above research questions,the author conducted a three-month teaching experiment on 120 students of two parallel classes in the first grade of a senior high school in Renshou.The teaching materials are from Book two and Book three published by FLTRP.And three research instruments were adopted in the research,including questionnaire,test and interview.During the teaching experiment,the experimental class adopted Theme-based Teaching Mode in English reading teaching,and the control class adopted the original reading teaching mode.Two sets of questionnaires and tests were conducted in the two classes before and after the experiment,and the collected data was analyzed by SPSS23.0 and Excel.After the experiment,the author interviewed six students in the experimental class and analyzed the data of the interview.Based on the findings of data analysis,it can be found that the application of Theme-based Teaching Mode in English reading teaching of senior high school can effectively stimulate students’ learning interest in English reading.And when students complete a task in English,their sense of learning accomplishment will be enhanced,which will make them have a stronger motivation to English reading learning.Furthermore,through the analysis of the questionnaires,tests,and interview,the author also found that Theme-based Teaching Mode has a positive effect on students’ English reading competence and reading achievement. |
