Student engagement is a hot issue in the field of international higher education research. This research topic is of great significance to the theory and practice of education reform in China. It demonstrates the educational idea of “student learning and development” as the center and contributes to education and teaching quality evaluation and talent training quality assurance.Foreign research on college students’ engagement has become mature, and it has made the overall development in the field of higher education. While in China, scholars have paid much attention to research on college students’ engagement in recent years. However, domestic research is still in the exploratory stage, and it tends to focus on theoretical discussion and the introduction of foreign-related research, but the study of influencing factors is not profound enough, and there is not too much research on the influencing factors of student engagement in college English classroom. Therefore, from students’ perspective, the author uses questionnaire survey, classroom video observation, interview and other methods to study the current situation and reasons for college students’ engagement in the English classroom. This paper attempts to answer the following two questions:1.What is the current status of students’ behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement in the college English classroom?2.What factors influence students’ behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement in the college English classroom? This paper literature reviews the research on “student engagement,” revises and designs this study’s questionnaire, and conducts a random questionnaire survey of college students at a university in Northeast China. Also,it realizes the present situation of college students’ behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement, analyzing the influencing factors. The research is about to provide new ideas and practical suggestions for future English teaching and offer effective strategies for Chinese college students to improve English learning. This study finds that: 1.Student engagement in college English classroom has the following characteristics:(1)Student engagement is relatively good.Behavioral engagement ranks the first, followed by emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement is the last.(2)Some significant differences of student engagement in college English classroom exist in such aspects as gender, disciplines, and grades. What’s more, differences also occur in behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement.(3)In the behavioral dimension, the problems include the lack of active discussion with teachers and students in English classes, and classroom learning behaviors need to be strengthened. In the emotional dimension, the problems are insufficient in sense of belonging, and English learning effect. In the cognitive dimension, the problems are concerned with surface learning instead of deep learning, and short of self-reflection and summary.2.It is found that some factors cause student disengagement including students’ motivation, interest and concentration, teachers’ teaching concepts and models, and teaching content, together with the school’s English learning environment, curriculum provision, and evaluation system.Based on the above analysis and the significant findings, the author points out that in order to improve student engagement in college English classroom,it is necessary to arouse students’ interest and motivation during learning and help them master various learning methods and strategies in a supportive campus environment.
