The Study Of "V+V" Construction And Verbal Object | | Posted on:2019-12-22 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:X Q Xu | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2505306479976839 | Subject:Linguistics and Applied Linguistics | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | The author surveyed the structure “predicate verb+verbal object” in which the verbal part acts as the object.Firstly, the author described and surveyed the predicate verb and verbal object in the “predicate verb+verbal object” structure under the background of structuralism linguistics carefully and completely.By surveying the 1,223 verbs and 2,117 items with verbal objects listed in “Dictionary of Chinese Verbs’ Usage” and conducting classification as well as statistic, the author found the object attached with a verb is unevenly distributed continuum and it changes to verbal character from nominal character gradually;in addition, the verbs available to be attached with nominal objects account for more than 50% all the verbs.By describing and analyzing the sorts and functions of verbal objects in the structure “predicate verb+verbal object”,it was found that the part available to be verbal objects mainly includes bare verbs and verbal phrases.Regarding the semantic relation between predicate verbs and verbal objects, the latter can’t act as the semantic roles requiring highly for nominal character such as an action’s tool, category, time and place but can act as the semantic roles with certain verbal character such as an action’s result, mode, reason and target.Secondly, the author analyzed the characteristics of the verbs and verbal part that may enter the position of the object and interpreted the toughness of the verbs that may enter the position of the object in “predicate verb+verbal object” structure by applying transitive theory in system-functional linguistics and embarking on the ten definite syntactic and semantic features proposed by Hopper&Thompson.Guided by relevant theories of cognitive linguistics and embarking on the relation between verbal objects and predicate verbs, the author proposed a cognition-related verbs’ priority sequence,i.e.“Cognitive Verbs >Oral Verbs> Realistic Verbs”,indicating the verbs at the left side are higher in priority and binding as well as dominant to those at the rights side. The verbs with higher priority, lying in front of the verbs with lower priority may occupy the verbal position of a sentence while the verbs with lower priority will lie in the position of the object.Pursuant to such a priority sequence, the verbs in verbal position are always the cognitive verbs as well as Oral verbs with higher priority while the verbs in the position of the object are the realistic verbs with lower priority.Thirdly, the author described and analyzed the structure “verb +こと/もの/の” in which a Japanese verbal part acts as the object. The nominal phrases indicated with“こと(koto)” and “の(no)” may act as the main object on the whole sentence and express different meanings with attached different auxiliary words. The verbal part indicated with the same are different from each other. When “もの(mono)” and“こと(koto)” are different in meanings when they act as general nouns. When they act as form verbs, the use range and frequency of “もの(mono)” constituting nominal part is far smaller than “こと(koto)” and not as typical as “こと(koto)”.Finally, the author compared Chinese verbal part acting as the object and Japanese verbal part acting as the object in coding modes and factors.Chinese is more obvious in sequence while Japanese apply “ こと/も の/ の” and similar words to indicate the verbal objects. The author provided the diagram of Japanese indicated verbal objects and verified the priority sequence “Cognitive Verbs >Oral Verbs>Realistic Verbs” is also applicable to Japanese. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | "Verb+Verb" Construction, Verbal Object, Cognitive Linguistics, Japanese Case-auxiliary Word, Formal Noun | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
