| The characteristics of“professionalization”and“practicability”of English teaching in secondary vocational schools require that English teaching activities attach importance to language ability testing.China’s Standards of English Language Ability(hereinafter referred to as CSE)provides a comprehensive description of learners’English proficiency in different periods in the Chinese context.It not only provides a target reference for English teaching and assessment,but also a reference for self-assessment and learning planning.What is the current situation of English teaching based on CSE in secondary vocational schools?What are the problems in secondary vocational English teaching and what are the reasons?This study adopted quantitative and qualitative research methods,used literature analysis,questionnaire survey and interviews,investigated the current situation and problems while applying CSE in secondary vocational English teaching.The study was carried out in three secondary vocational schools in Guangzhou.The questionnaire surveyed 300 students and the study also interviewed 6 students and 6 English teachers in these schools.It is learned that while implementing CSE in secondary vocational English teaching,through detailed descriptions to students’different English levels,students are better aware of their advantages and disadvantages of learning English,they can better design their life and career,make out their studying goals,adjust their learning strategies and achieve their aimed English ability level.The teachers can make good use of CSE to make out students’ZPD,conduct the competence-based instruction,set suitable teaching goals for students and make students more willing to take part in the English activities.Teachers’beliefs,knowledge and skills of using CSE play important roles in deepening the reform of English education and examination of secondary vocational schools.However,due to some teachers lack of the understanding of CSE,some teachers’beliefs to CSE are not strong enough,and students’weak English foundation and poor study autonomy,it is necessary to strengthen the learning and training for secondary vocational English te1achers in order to guide and improve the students’English ability. |
