The relation between higher education and social mobility has been a longstanding issue. The Years That Matter Most: How College Makes or Breaks Us elaborates on how American higher education system may affect social mobility. The source text comes from the first chapter of the book, which probes that system with a vivid experience of a student.Based on Newmark’s text typology, the source text can be classified as informative text.Large numbers of complex sentences, parallel structures and various usages of dashes are the main challenges and difficulties encountered in this project.Guided by Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the translator adopted segmentation and inversion to render complex sentences, flexible techniques such as repetition and conversion to translate parallelism, and retention and deletion to deal with dashes, therefore making the rendition more accurate, coherent, and friendly to readers. The report has five chapters. The first chapter is an overview of the translation project, describing its background, objectives of the project and the structure of this report. The second chapter explicates the source text from two perspectives: the author and the book, content and linguistics.Chapter There introduces the guiding theory. The next chapter analyzes the three difficulties encountered in the project with examples. The last chapter summarizes the experience from the project and the unsolved problems.
