Report On The Interpreting Practice For “2019 Training Course On Tunnel Engineering And Technology For Nepal” In Light Of Gile’s Interpretation Comprehension Equation

Since the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative,China,while committed to its own development,has been providing the best assistance possible to other developing countries and taking on international obligations.Interpreting work runs throughout almost the whole process of such foreign-aid projects,as the interpreting quality of the interpreter has an important impact on the quality of any such project.Based on Gile’s Interpretation Comprehension Equation,this report analyzes the writer’s interpreting practice for the lecture on Design of Auxiliary Construction Measures For Tunnel in“2019 Training Course on Tunnel Engineering and Technology for Nepal,” aiming to explore factors influencing the performance of tunnel engineering interpretation and the coping strategies from the perspective of the interpretation comprehension equation.The practice of the tunnel engineering interpretation has led to the realization that difficulty in comprehension is the main barrier in interpreting,which is detailed in general in Gile’s Interpretation Comprehension Equation of linguistic knowledge,extra-linguistic knowledge,and deliberate analysis.On the basis of the characteristics of tunnel engineering interpretation and of the personal experiences of the writer of this report,a conclusion can be reached that intra-lingual knowledge and extra-linguistic knowledge converge to pose the great difficulties in comprehension,with the former represented by excessive technical terms of tunnel engineering,Chinese experts’ speaking style and Nepalese English with local accent,and the latter by relevant professional knowledge of auxiliary tunnel construction measures,tunnel engineering drawings,jargon,etc.And the deliberate analysis of these two parts is the key to successful interpreting work,for it is the interaction of intra-lingual knowledge,extra-linguistic knowledge and their deliberate analysis that ensures correct comprehension and successful interpreting,leading to the quality completion of such interpreting work.Applying Gile’s Interpretation Comprehension Equation,the writer of this report hopes that findings and suggestions herein will be of some value to others who may engage in interpreting work of this nature.
