As industrialization and urbanization accelerate, the commitment to green, highquality development becomes imperative for addressing China’s current energy scarcity and environmental challenges. The "3060" dual carbon target underlines the necessity of enhancing energy utilization efficiency, with green technology innovation as the linchpin.Promoting green technology innovation serves as a crucial strategy to reduce energy consumption, safeguard the environment, improve energy utilization efficiency, and foster China’s pursuit of sustainable development. This paper begins by reviewing and synthesizing the current state of domestic and international research, thereby defining the concepts of green technology innovation and energy utilization efficiency. It also determines the calculation methodologies and research methods for assessing the impact on energy utilization efficiency. The study then employs macro panel data from 30 provinces in China spanning from 2000 to 2020(excluding Tibet,Hong Kong,Macao, and Taiwan).A super-efficiency SBM model is utilized, with carbon emissions treated as an unintended output,to measure energy use efficiency, analyze its spatiotemporal heterogeneity, and investigate China’s energy use efficiency dynamic growth model based on the ML index. The paper further examines the spatial correlation patterns of energy utilization efficiency across China’s provinces, and analyses both the direct and spatial spillover effects of green technology innovation on energy utilization efficiency in individual and neighboring provinces.Lastly, the paper investigates the threshold effect of green technology innovation on energy utilization efficiency.Key findings of the study are: firstly, regional spatiotemporal analysis of energy utilization efficiency reveals significant differences between eastern and western provinces. The energy utilization efficiency is notably higher in the eastern region, moderate in the northeast, and generally lower in the central and western regions. From a spatial evolution standpoint, there is an increase in provinces with moderate energy utilization efficiency, with provinces having low energy utilization efficiency still concentrated in the northwest, and high-efficiency provinces progressively expanding from the southeastern coastal areas to the central region.Secondly, green technology innovation exhibits significant spatial spillover characteristics on energy utilization efficiency, presenting notable direct and indirect positive effects. This implies that green technology innovation not only enhances local energy efficiency but also improves energy utilization efficiency in neighboring areas. Therefore, robust development of green technology innovation is beneficial for improving regional energy utilization efficiency. Moreover, green technology innovation shows a "U-shaped" effect on energy utilization efficiency, initially inhibiting and then promoting it.This results in a double threshold effect. When green technology innovation is lower than the first threshold,it hampers energy utilization efficiency.Upon surpassing the first threshold, the impact of green technology innovation shifts from hindering to improving energy utilization efficiency. However, once it exceeds the second threshold, its effect on improving energy utilization efficiency diminishes.Based on these findings, the paper proposes recommendations for constructing a green technology innovation ecosystem, increasing research and development investment, and optimizing the energy consumption structure, providing insights for practical development.
