With the increasing of consumption ability and personality needs, the influence of color on sales market of passenger car is becoming more and more important. The ability to develop colorful cars is very important for market share improvement. The traditional new product development(NPD)process has limited efficiency and it can’t meet the needs of market growth. As process modification can improve the efficiency of NPD and customer satisfaction,it has become the key factor for enterprises to maintain sustainable development.M company was studied as a typical case.Based on relevant literature and theory, this paper analyzed the NPD status of automotive decorative coatings and discussed the root causes of main problems in NPD process. What’s more, the feasibility of improving NPD process using the “Identify-Define-Design-Optimize-Verify”(IDDOV)process of Design for Six Sigma(DFSS)was also discussed. The key inputs and outputs of NPD process were analyzed by tools such as quality function deployment(QFD),cause-effect matrix(C & E Matrix),failure mode and effect analysis(FMEA).And a re-designed NPD process was gained. Finally, the data of NPD processes before and after improvement were collected and a control experiment was designed to prove that the new process had achieved good results.Taking customer needs and costs into account,DFSS can design the NPD process by using systematic tools and methods. In compliance with the characteristics of coating business, this study has integrated DFSS into the NPD process of Automotive coatings, which has practical vale for improving the inherent quality of coating products. And this also provides a reference for promoting the application of DFSS in the coating industry.
