People describe dragon’s blood as a "dark red resinous substance derived from various plants" that has long been used in Chinese medicine to treat conditions including ulcers and wounds. It had been used widely in many kinds of disease of blood system since ancient times, and it was called "effective medicine of promoting blood circulation".Steroidal saponins are the principal constituent of the total extraction from D.cochinchinensis.The main components of the red resin from Dracaena cohinchinensis are flavonoids, stilbenes and other phenolic compounds.Steroidal saponins account for only 1%.After an overall analysis,it was confirmed that during the forming process of dragon’s blood, steroidal saponins were degraded by organisms infect and other factors. Therefore,in this experiment,we chose the dragon’s blood with short forming time.By studying the difference of steroidal saponins which isolated from plants of Dracaena and dragon’s blood of Dracaena cochinchinensis,we hope to find the changing rules of Steroidal saponins composition during the forming process of dragon’s blood, and discuss the biosynthetic approach of steroidal saponins from dragon’s blood.By kinds of separate methods and chromatographic materials,22 sterides were isolated form the dragon’s blood of D.cochinchinensis.And these compounds contain 19 steroidal saponins,1 cholestanes and 3 stigmastanes.Steroidal saponins isolated from the red resin were remarkablely degraded. In previous research, one of the spirostanols isolated from the red resin of Dracaena cohinchinensis named Dracaenogenin A is the first example of a 12(13→14)abeospirostane spirostanoid found in nature. And 3 unusual 22S-spirostane steroids also isolated from the red resin by author. The formation of these compounds is a process involving degraded and organisms infect. As forming time extension, steroidal saponins will all decompose to small molecules. The findings can give a direction for further research of forming mechanism of dragon’s blood and benefited for investigate the chemical constituents of the red resin from other plants of Dracaena. The 13C NMR spectra of different steroidal saponins show different features that are related to skeletons and type and position of the substituent groups in the compounds. The findings are helpful for structure elucidation and assignments of the spectroscopic signals of such compounds.
