ObjectiveThe study investigated the current status and influencing factors of perceived stress, coping style and depression level among medical postgraduates. To analyze the relationship between perceived stress, coping style and depression level in medical postgraduates. To explore the mediating role of coping style in the relationship between perceived stress and depression level. It provided a theoretical basis for improving their coping ability and mental health level, and provided reference for the future training of medical postgraduates and mental health education or consultation in medical schools.MethodsIn this study, the convenience sampling method was used. From November 2020 to May 2021,470 medical postgraduates in three medical colleges in Liaoning Province were selected as the research objects.General information questionnaire,Chinese Perceived Stress Scale(CPSS),Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire(SCSQ)and Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS)were used for questionnaire survey. The data were compiled and entered into SPSS 21.0 statistical software. The statistical methods used were descriptive analysis,t-test,one-way anova, pearson correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, and construction and validation of structural equation models.Results1.The total score of perceived stress was(25.79±7.40),the score of tension dimension was(14.68±4.07),and the score of sense of control dimension was(11.11±4.11).The total score of coping style was(35.08±6.45),positive coping style was(24.88±5.47)and negative coping style was(10.21±4.19).The total depression level was(46.60±10.80)points.2.There were statistically significant differences in the perceived stress scores of medical postgraduates in terms of gender and an only child(P<0.05);there were statistically significant differences in the depression scores of medical postgraduates in gender, age, grade, degree type and family origin(P<0.05).The scores of positive coping style of medical postgraduates were significantly different in gender, age, grade and family origin(P<0.05);the scores of negative coping style of medical postgraduates were significantly different in grade, degree type, family origin, whether they worked, and an only child(P<0.05).3.The correlation analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between perceived stress and depression level in medical postgraduates. The levels of perceived stress and depression of medical postgraduates were positively correlated with negative coping style and negatively correlated with positive coping style.4.The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that perceived stress positively predicted depression level(β=0.334,t=8.157,P<0.01);perceived stress negatively predicted positive coping style(β=-0.243,t=-5.021,P<0.01);perceived stress positively predicted negative coping style(β=0.169,t=3.486,P<0.01);perceived stress, positive coping style and negative coping style all had predictive effects on depression level(perceived stress:β=0.255,t=6.203,P<0.01;positive coping style:β=-0.213,t=-5.220,P<0.01;negative coping style:β=0.145,t=3.614,P<0.01).5.The structural equation model showed that the direct effect of perceived stress on positive coping style was-0.270,the direct effect of perceived stress on negative coping style was 0.222,and the direct effect of positive coping style on depression level was-0.267,the direct effect of negative coping style on depression level was 0.198,the direct effect of perceived stress on depression level was 0.271;negative and positive coping styles played a part in mediating the relationship between perceived stress and depression, and the indirect effect of perceived stress on depression level was 0.116,accounting for 29.97%(0.116/0.387)of the total effect.Conclusions1.Medical postgraduates had a high level of perceived stress and depression level, and they were more likely to respond positively to stressful events, followed by negative ones.2.Female and only child of medical postgraduates had higher perceived stress level;Female,30~year old, third year, academic and rural area of medical postgraduates had higher depression level;Male, less than 26 years old, first year and urban of medical postgraduates were more likely to adopt positive coping style;Third year, academic, rural area, non working, only child of medical postgraduates were more likely to adopt negative coping style.3.There were significant correlations among perceived stress, coping style and depression level of medical postgraduates.4.Coping style played a part in mediating the relationship between perceived stress and depression in medical postgraduates. |
