A Survey On The Motivations And Effects Of Using Simplification Strategy

With the deepening development of globalization,China is playing a more and more important role on the international stage.And the significance of interpreting in foreign communications is gradually increasing.Consecutive interpreting is the cornerstone of interpreting learning.And it is also the most practiced part of student interpreters in the graduate stage.In the process of learning and practicing,interpreters constantly master various interpreting strategies to improve the quality of the target language,among which simplification strategy is very important.In recent years,interpreting competitions have gradually become an effective tool to feedback student interpreters’ learning conditions and a reliable basis for teachers to adjust their teaching methods.All China Interpreting Contest sponsored by the Translators Association of China,as the most authoritative interpreting competition in China with the largest number of competitors,has become an important data source for interpretation research.As a survey report,the thesis intends to investigate the motivations and effects of using the simplification strategy in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.The survey subjects are the final contestants of the 7th-9th All China Interpreting Contest.The survey methods of questionnaire and interview are adopted to collect data on the overall situation of motivations and effects of using simplification strategy.Descriptive statistical are implemented through SPSSAU.With the help of deverbalization and the effort model,the report wants to answer the following two questions:1.what are the motivations for contestants to use the simplification strategy?2.what kind of effects can be achieved after using the simplification strategy?The author has collected 107 questionnaires.And 105 of them are valid,which describes the different motivations and effects of using the simplification strategy under different circumstances.Given the objectivity of the questionnaire,the author has also made several interviews for further investigation.And the results show that the most initiative motivation to use simplification strategy in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting is to save time.When facing different kinds of the source language,motivations of simplification strategy can also be summarized as:to eliminate interpreting obstacles for interpreters and to make target language understandable for listeners.The use of simplification is a learning process that is progressing spirally.Using simplification strategy properly can help to relieve cognitive load and improve the quality of target language.However,excessive omission and split can result in negative effects.The survey result can help provide statistical support for studying the simplification strategy in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.It also can offer suggestions for student interpreters in learning and applying the strategy,which may help them make progress in interpreting.
