Coherence In Post-editing Of Fishery Texts

This translation practice reported is based on the model of “Machine translation +Post-editing”.The selected machine translation platform system is YICAT,and the source text is the third and fourth chapter of Encouraging Policy Change for Sustainable and Resilience Fisheries published by OECD.The selected text,which focuses on the fishery policy change,falls under the category of fishery policy text,with formal style,rigorous wording,clear coherence as well as accurate and standardized expression.For the source text,logicality is a critical support for content statement,while for the translated text,coherence is a vital criterion for translation quality.However,it is found that during the post-editing that YICAT fails to reconstruct the overall coherence of the translated text due to the differences in expression,language habits,cohesion mechanism and conversion mode between Chinese and English.Based on the classification of common errors in machine translation and the analysis of the characteristics of the source text,this report puts emphasis on the strategies to enhance coherence in post-editing of the source text.Improving the quality of machine translation by enhancing the coherence and ensures that the accuracy and readability of the machine-translated text and helps to faithfully convey the author’s point of view,which has been the focus of this translation practice.According to Halliday and Hasan’s Cohesion in English,Wang Dongfeng’s Coherence and Translation and related theories from other translation scholars,this report explores strategies to reconstruct coherence in post-editing,and the strategies involve enhancing grammatical coherence,semantic coherence and logical coherence.In terms of grammatical coherence,this report analyzes how to achieve it by using reference and substitution.As for semantic coherence,this report focuses on how to achieve it at inter-word and inter-sentence level.With regard to logical coherence,this report mainly analyzes how to achieve it by identifying and describing the casual,transitive,and conditional relationships implied in the source text.It is believed that this translation practice report will provide some references and implications for other translators’ similar post-editing practice.
