With the further development of multimedia technology,images have been integrated in various media technologies,resulting in a pictorial era of human life.Images appear as a feature of the Times,and people’s way of thinking has changed with the intervention of images,prompting people to improve their ability to interpret images.And the ability of reading images is also important for elementary level Chinese learners.With the rapid development of international Chinese education,textbooks have become the most important teaching resources,carrying the main content of teaching.As an important part of textbooks,illustrations have attracted more and more people’s attention.High-quality illustrations can help students understand language knowledge and improve their ability to read pictures,so it is very necessary to analyze illustrations in teaching materials of Chinese as a foreign language.This paper mainly adopts three research methods:text analysis,statistical analysis and questionnaire survey and this paper takes the three sets of textbooks as examples to try to answer the following questions:First,the general situation of the illustrations of the three sets of textbooks.Second,the distribution characteristics and similarities and differences of the graphic relations of the three sets of textbooks.Thirdly,the enlightenment brought by the graphic-graphic relationship of the three sets of textbooks to the illustration design of reading textbooks.The content of this paper is divided into six parts:The first part includes research significance and research purpose.At the same time,it defines the concepts involved in this paper for the purpose of determining the scope of the research content.The second part is the research review of illustration,multimodal discourse and image-text relation.The third part makes a statistical analysis of three representative elementary Chinese reading textbooks from six aspects.The fourth part introduces the images and texts in the three reading textbooks with Martinec&Salway’s theoretical framework.The fifth part is the questionnaire survey,aiming to understand the preference of Chinese learners at the primary level for illustration.Based on the analysis of illustrations and image-text relation in three textbooks,the sixth part puts forward corresponding suggestions for the design of illustrations.The conclusion of the seventh part summarizes this paper,and points out the shortcomings of this study.
