The double reduction policy sets clear requirements for compulsory education homework management in five areas: homework management mechanism,total amount of homework,quality of homework design,homework guidance,and after-school time.This study aims to investigate the current situation of English homework design in junior high school under the double reduction policy,identify the problems,and try to analyze the causes behind them,so as to promote the effect of the double reduction policy.The specific research questions are as follows:1.What is the general status of English homework in junior high school under the double reduction policy?2.What are the problems of teachers’ design of English homework in junior high school?3.What are the causes that lead to the problems of teachers’ design of English homework in junior high school?In order to answer the above research questions,the author collected and analyzed 155 English homework samples from four grades in a junior high school in Zibo,and conducted questionnaire survey with 353 students to get the status quo.Subsequently,the author summarized the reasons for the problems through interviews with four English teachers,so as to propose counter measures and suggestions to solve the problems.The findings reveal that junior high school students have an overall positive attitude towards English homework under the double reduction policy.They are aware of the importance and multiple purposes of English homework.Besides,the amount of English homework is moderate and does not overburden the students.Furthermore,the content of English homework is closely linked to the classroom content of the day.However,due to the deep-rooted influence of the traditional examination culture,the current English homework still suffers from the following problems: knowledge-centered purpose,unified difficulty,monotonous content and form.The main factors contributing to these problems include: the inadequacy of the school’s homework management mechanism,the lack of professional guidance and training for teachers,their incorrect perception of the double reduction policy and the essence of homework,their heavy workload,and great difference in students’ English levels.In response to the above findings,the paper concludes with recommendations for optimizing the design of English homework in junior high school and call for the necessity to build a new English homework design model,which is in line with the English curriculum reform to cultivate students’ English subject core competencies.
