A Report On The E-C Translation Of Environmental Science Text Under The Guidance Of Semantic And Communicative Translation Theory

With the rapid development of modern science and techno logy(sci-tech),the translation of English sci-tech texts has played a vital role in promoting the sci-tech exchange in various fields.And the translation of popular science texts also accounts for a great portion,which plays the role of conveying information,expressing ideas and calling for action.Popular science English involves multiple fields,among which the translation of the text related to the field of environmental engineering can better promote our foreign communication in environmental protection and provide a reference for other translation workers in this field.The original text of this translation practice report is selected from the English book The Temporalities of Waste-Out of Sight,Out of Time(part I and part II),which discusses the issues of waste,food waste and security from temporalities and other multiple dimensions.The translator applies Newmark’s theory of semantic translation and communicative translation to guide this report and mainly analyzes from these three aspects of lexical,syntactic and textual levels.At lexical level,literal translation,free translation,zero translation and other methods are used to handle the proper nouns and polysemy.For the translation at syntactic level,the nominalization structure is translated by part-of-speech conversion,sentence splitting and free translation of special words;the passive sentences in the original text are translated into Chinese active voice,non-subject sentences and passive sentences;and the long and complex sentences are translated through adjusting the word order,splitting and combining sentences and adjusting the sentence structures in the whole.In addition,cohesion and coherence are used to analyze the translation of sentences and paragraphs.Through this translation practice,the translator finds that Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory is feasible and applicable to the translation of popular science texts,especially in the translation of abstract terms and concepts,complex sentences as well as the discourse analysis in these texts.At the same time,the translation strategies used in this practice report can also be used in the translation of other texts.
