Long Sentences Translation Guided By Communicative Translation Theory

Global Higher Education During COVID-19: Policy,Science,and Technology is a collection of academic papers,published in September 2021.The papers describe the challenges and opportunities that the epidemic has brought to higher education institutions around the world.How to improve educational policies and teaching practices has become a hot topic among scholars in various countries.This book uses the responses of federal institutions in southern Brazil to the epidemic and the personal experiences of Chinese students as practical examples,intending to provide new pedagogical approaches that can be adopted to enhance global higher education and promote academic exchange in the post-epidemic era.The original text is excerpted from the first part of the book,in which there are a lot of long sentences with complex grammatical structures.The theory of communicative translation adheres to the norms of the target language,and focuses on the readers’ response and the effective transmission of information,which can,to some extent,resolves the translation difficulties of long sentences in academic texts.As a result,this report uses the communicative translation theory as the theoretical framework.The translator takes preposition,repetition and inserting for the translation of long sentences with attributive clauses,sequencing and integrating for the translation of long sentences with adverbial clauses,recasting and cutting for the translation of long sentences with object clauses,cutting and conversion for the translation of long sentences with appositive clauses,sequencing and reversing for the translation of long sentences with parenthesis.The report is composed of five chapters.Chapter One introduces the source text,analysis of the source text and research significance.Chapter Two describes the whole translation process.Chapter Three is the theoretical framework,expounding the definition of long sentences,the classification of long sentences and the differences between Chinese and English long sentences,and also introduces the communicative translation theory as well as the applicability of communicative translation theory to the translation practice.Chapter Four is the case study,in which translation strategies are discussed with specific examples.Chapter Five summarizes the main findings and limitations of this translation report.
