A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Packaging Materials And Processing For Food,Pharmaceuticals And Cosmetics(Excerpts)

With the progress of modern society,the packaging industry in China has developed rapidly.Packaging plays a storage and protection role for commodities and it affects the market competitiveness and brand image of commodities.However,the ordinary packaging is severely damaged during transportation,which results in certain economic losses.Hence,packaging quality needs to be improved.In addition,the unreasonable use of packaging materials causes serious ecological pollution.Therefore,the use of materials and the manufacturing technologies need to be constantly innovated in order to produce high-quality and environment-friendly packaging.The innovation of packaging materials and technologies not only provides convenience for people’s life,but also benefits the sustainable development of society.This paper is a practice report on English-Chinese translation of chemical engineering text,aiming at translation analysis of research in the field of packaging materials.The translation materials are selected from the second and the third chapter of the book Packaging Materials and Processing for Food,Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics,which studies paper-based materials and glass materials.First of all,the report introduces the background,purpose and significance of the translation practice,and elaborates the process of the translation practice,including preparations for the translation,procedures of the translation and translation quality control.Secondly,the translator makes case analysis of the source text in three aspects embracing vocabulary,syntax and discourse.Vocabulary translation contains the manipulations of the word number,word class,and word meaning,involving the uses of addition,omission,word class conversion,and word meaning extension.At the syntactical level,the translator utilizes division,combination,and reconstruction to translate sentences.At the textual level,the translator discusses the two aspects involving cohesion and coherence.Finally,the report summarizes the findings and limitations of the translation practice,as well as suggestions for future translation work.This translation practice can help the translator learn more professional knowledge,improve translation ability,and can provide domestic researchers with experience and resources about packaging materials,promoting the development of China’s packaging industry.
