A Report On The Translation Of The Turquoise Ledge (Excerpts)

This is an English to Chinese translation report,based on the 7-13 chapters of memoir The Turqoise Ledge.The author is Leslie Marmon Silko,a famous American Indian woman writer.Her work is full of Indian ethnicity and culture.In addition,there is no Chinese translation of The Turquoise Ledge at home or abroad.Therefore,this translation report is of importance in enriching the translation of this type of text,the memoir.At the same time,through the reading of the text,the translator hopes that the reader will become more aware of community with a shared future for mankind and environmental protection.Under the view of the strategy of explicitation,the focus is on how to make the translation in line with the style of the original text,highlighting the important role of explicitation in translation.Through a comparative analysis of the original text and the translated text,the translator finds that the application of explicitization in translation can be divided into three levels.The first is the lexical level,where the translator translates the vocabulary more specifically and accurately,mainly through the translation techniques of specification and culturally loaded words.Secondly,at the syntactic level,the translator translates sentences through negation and addition to make them more fluent and reduce the reader’s reading difficulties.Finally,at the discourse level,the translator adds articulation words to make the translation more in line with the reading habits of the target readers.This report consists of four chapters.Chapter one introduces the task background,task description and report structure.Chapter two describes the whole translation process,including pre-translation,translation and post-translation.Chapter three is a case study,which analyses the case in the context of an explicitation strategy.Chapter four sums up the translator’s gains and limitations during the translation practice.Through this translation practice,the translator has gained an understanding of such texts as memoirs,Indian culture,etc.,improved the translation skills,and mastered more translation strategies and techniques,which is a considerable gain for her.The translator also hopes that this translation report will provide references for future translation practice.
