| This report takes the Chinese-English translation of Travel Brochure of Xixi National Wetland Park as the object of analysis,with the aim of exploring translation difficulties at lexical,syntactic and textual levels and finding translation methods to overcome such difficulties under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s text typology.There are three main difficulties in translation of this travel brochure.The first difficulty is the translation of culture-loaded terms.The source text has many culture-loaded terms,and due to cultural vacancies,these terms are difficult to translate.The second difficulty is the translation of long sentences.The first kind of long sentences is long sentences with a string of names of celebrities and the second one is long sentences with dimensional layout.Translation of these long sentences are no easy work.The third difficulty is how to improve the coherence of the target text.The source text has hidden incoherent parts,so the translator needs to deal with such incoherence.Moreover,due to different language habits of Chinese and English,the translator needs to find a way to improve the coherence of the target text when translating.According to Peter Newmark’s text typology,tourism texts are vocative texts whose main function is vocative function and secondary function is informative function.Vocative function emphasizes readership and the translation should be comprehensible to readers.Informative function underlines the conveying of information or facts and the linguistic form can be abandoned if necessary.Based on the text typology,the translator adopts different translation methods to overcome aforesaid difficulties.For the translation of culture-loaded terms,three methods are used,including literal translation,transliteration,and free translation.For the translation of two kinds of long sentences,two translation methods are adopted,including adaption and rearrangement.To improve coherence of the target text,three translation methods are employed,including correction,deletion and restructuring.By using these translation methods,the target text is more concise,coherent and readable,conforming to linguistic features of English tourism texts.Meanwhile,cultural information behind Xixi Wetland is conveyed to target readers.This translation practice proves that it is proper to use Newmark’s text typology to guide the translation of tourism texts. |
