The Coming Plague is a documentary work, which tells the occurrence and development of the world’s major epidemic diseases and intractable diseases in recent years. This translation practice is selected from Chapter 16 of the book, which tells the influence of seal plague, cholera, global warming and biodiversity on the earth resources and human living environment.Based on Newmark’s text type theory, this paper studies the translation of documentary texts, and finds difficulties encountered in translation process from linguistic aspect.Translators should fully respect the original author, convey accurate information, and fully consider readers’ perception and acceptance. Therefore,in the process of translation, both the accurate transmission of information and the reader’s reading experience should be taken into account. Therefore, under the guidance of Newmark’s text type theory, the translator analyzes the types of texts and corresponding translation ideas, and finds that semantic translation and communicative translation play a good guiding role in documentary texts. Then, aiming at different problems at the lexical, sentence and discourse levels, the author adopts corresponding translation methods such as addition, subtraction, word order adjustment and cohesion to solve the linguistic difficulties of documentary texts in translation practice. This practice report gives consideration to the realization of author’s information and reader’s perception, and provides a reference for the research of documentary text translation.
