| The development of psychology in China is relatively backward, and there are few studies on translation of psychological text. The translator undergoes the translation of the third chapter of the classic psychological work Children of the Future by William Reich to figure out the translation methods of this text. This report introduces three-stage translation practice including pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation,summarizes the core views of communicative translation theory as well as the three major principles of communicative translation(reader-oriented,effect-equivalent,information-accurate principles),and reviews the existing studies of translation of psychological texts. Finally, this report, with the theoretical framework of communicative translation as the guidance, analyzes the typical translation examples from Children of the Future. The major findings are as follows. At the lexical level, for the translation of terms, free translation, literal translation, and specification may be used so as to make the target text(TT)more accurate in information delivery and achieve the equivalent effect between the source text(ST)and target text. For the rendition of verb-object structure, liberal translation can be used based on the collocation of the target language to cater to the expression habit of the TT readers. As for the translation of nominal groups, addition and shift may be adopted to make the TT coherent in semantic meaning and natural in expression. At the syntactic level, for the rendition of passive voice sentences, the shift from passive voice to active voice can be adopted to make the TT more acceptable to TT readers, whereas the passive voice can be also preserved when the topic is not suitable for public discussion. As for the translation of long and complex sentences, addition, division, and structural adjustment can be adopted to make the TT concise and clear, reducing the cognitive burden of TT readers. At the textual level, for the translation of logical cohesive devices in the psychological texts, addition and division can be used to strengthen the fluency and smoothness of the TT if the multiple logical relations are present in the ST.For the rendition of grammatical cohesive devices in the psychological texts, addition and omission can be adopted to make the TT concise and logical to TT readers.Whatever translation methods or techniques are employed, three principles of communicative translation should be followed in the translation of psychological texts.First, the accuracy of information delivery(information-accurate principle)should be maintained since psychological texts belong to informative text.Based on it,TT must be concise,fluent(effect-equivalent principle),acceptable, and readable(reader-oriented principle)so as to realize the communicative purpose of translation. |
