Due to historical and practical reasons,teaching Chinese characters to speakers of other languages has always been a weak part in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages,especially similar Chinese characters.Misunderstanding between radical “亻” and radical “彳”,some undergraduates majoring in Chinese language at Bangor University found themselves confused with using both radicals correctly.This paper could reduce the difficulty of acquiring Chinese characters for the Chinese majors at Bangor University to a certain extent by conducting foreign teaching research on the characters with radical “亻” and radical “彳” and simultaneously help them build up Chinese character family.Both internal and external comparison between Chinese characters could improve the efficiency of learning.Adopting statistical analysis method,comparative analysis method,experimental teaching method and open interview method,this paper counts the characters with radical “亻” and radical “彳” appearing in the standard book “International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education”and the local comprehensive textbooks “Chinese in Steps” for Chinese undergraduate students at Bangor University,logically analyses 24 common used Chinese characters with radical “亻” and 4 with radical“彳” by tracing the origins and the evolution process,and designs concrete and feasible external teaching plan that then will be applied to actual teaching.The result has shown that helping students to be aware of Chinese character family,using the methods of Chinese character analysis and contrastive teaching to teach characters from Chinese character families with similar radicals can grab students’ interest in learning Chinese characters,reduce students’ resistance and the difficulty of writing Chinese characters,help them improve the efficiency of Chinese character recognition and promote them to learn to draw inferences from one case to remember Chinese characters in the same family.
