A Report On The E-C Translation Of Scientific Text Under The Guidance Of Back-transformation Theory

In recent years,international scientific and technological exchanges have become increasingly frequent,so the significance of scientific and technical translation is self-evident.The English-Chinese translation of scientific and technical texts can not only promote the communication among of sci-tech talents from different countries,but also help Chinese professionals catch up with the global scientific and technical development in time.This paper takes Interpreting Course of Scientific and Technical English compiled by Li Qingming in 2020 as the research object.Starting from the syntactic features of EST,this paper analyzes and illustrates the translation strategies applied to the translation practice under the guidance of backtransformation theory.Back-transformation theory was put forward by Eugene Nida,who proposed a detailed process of back-transformation in his book The Theory and Practice of Translation(1969),which consists of three stages: analysis,transfer and restructuring.It analyzes the grammatical relations and meanings of the surface structure of the language,transfers the kernel sentences of the source language into the kernel sentences of the target language,and restructures each part of the target language.Nida believes that translation is “to transform the surface structure of the source text into the deep structure,which is then translated into the deep structure of the target text,and finally the target text surface structure is developed from its deep structure on the basis of the grammatical and semantic analysis,” which is called back-transformation in translation.Guided by back-transformation theory,this paper takes the 18,000-word texts E-C translation from “interpreting practice” and “further training” sections in Interpreting Course of Scientific and Technical English as the translation study subject.This report mainly includes the following contents: Firstly,the requirements,significance and process of translation;Secondly,the research background of back-transformation theory at home and abroad,and detailed description of the three stages of analysis,transfer and restructuring.Finally,the problems existing in translated texts and the corresponding solutions under the guidance of backtransformation theory.The study shows that the back-transformation theory plays a guiding role in the translation of scientific and technical texts.This theory can not only help the translator clarify the thoughts in the process of translation,but also improve the translation quality of scientific and technical texts,so that the target text is accurate and fluent with characteristics of scientific and technical texts.
