Graphic is the first step in the process of Chinese character recognition,The learner’s awareness to recognize characters is important for Chinese character learning.In order to explore the ability of CSL beginners to finely recognize Chinese Characters,this study designs a forced-choice experiment,using similar Chinese characters as recognition materials,and introduces a study on Chinese native-speaking children for comparative analysis.Through the experiment,it finds that the structure effect exists,and the awareness of surround structure is better than that of the left-right structure and the top-bottom structure.The recognition awareness is influenced by the learning time and the language background.The recognition awareness of learners who have studied for 7-12 months are better than those who have studied for 0-6 months,and the learners with the background of Chinese character are better than those with the background of alphabetic text.Compared with CSL beginners,the recognition awareness of Chinese native-speaking children does not show an advantage,and the recognition speed is slower than that of CSL beginners.In terms of structure effect,it is also shown that the surround structure has the recognition advantage.The recognition errors of the subjects were analyzed,and the results and the conclusions of the data analysis generally confirmed each other.Learners who have studied for 7-12 months and learners of Chinese character background have advantages in recognizing most groups of similar Chinese characters.And it is found that CSL beginners and Chinese native-speaking children have a high recognition error rate for subtle stroke differences.This study also refers to 50 Chinese graduate students’ subjective similarity evaluation of the similar Chinese characters,and finds the evaluation can’t accurately predict errors for both groups of learners.The fine recognition process of Chinese character is very complex,which is affected by various factors such as the structure of Chinese characters,the learner’s learning time,and the textual information in the environment.Finally,on the basis of summarizing the experimental results,combining with the importance of character recognition for beginners of Chinese as a Second Language,some teaching suggestions for similar Chinese characters are presented.
