With the continuous development of technology,online one-on-one spoken language teaching is becoming a trend.And there is a lot of discussion among international Chinese teachers about how to design appropriate teaching programmers to improve students’ spoken Chinese.Unlike traditional teaching,the design of online spoken Chinese teaching needs to be more specific and personalized.This study is based on the strong communicative approach,and this study makes a set of teaching solutions for online one-on-one intermediate speaking instruction.The strong communicative approach adopts a "topic introduction-input content-communicative activity" approach,emphasizing that students are encouraged to summarize grammatical rules in practice,while the teacher plays a guiding and error-tolerant role.This method of teaching is also known as the "implicit teaching method" and the "process method".This study uses literature,implementation and survey feedback to design a teaching design for online one-on-one speaking classes,and to optimize the teaching design for online intermediate one-on-one speaking classes using a strong communicative approach.Based on relevant literature and actual teaching,this study summarizes the principles of online one-on-one teaching design based on the strong communicative approach as the principles of authenticity,relevance,communicative,consolidation and fun.The design investigates the feasibility of the design for the online one-on-one intermediate speaking classroom based on the strong communicative approach,and identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the design through classroom observation.After the implementation of the design,feedback from classroom observations and interviews with teachers,students and parents were used to collate changes and optimize the shortcomings of the design.In order to verify the effectiveness of the design for online teaching and learning,and to validate the innovation of the online one-on-one teaching research methodology,the design was also applied in an online one-to-many speaking classroom.The results show that the design is more feasible and effective in online one-on-one teaching,and the design is also applicable to one-to-many teaching.However,the design based on the strong communicative approach is not as effective in one-to-many teaching as in online one-on-one teaching,mainly because the online teaching software is not sufficiently designed for student-student interaction in speaking classes and there are differences between students’ speaking levels.The results of the classroom observations and semi-structured interviews revealed that the strong communicative approach provided more opportunities for students to demonstrate and communicate in the speaking classroom,which was more beneficial to intermediate learners of oral communication and increased their motivation and participation in the online one-on-one speaking class,and increased students’ enjoyment of the class.This study proposes a speaking instructional design scheme that incorporates the strong communicative approach,and validates and adapts it in actual teaching.The main contribution of this study is to provide a method for optimizing online one-on-one Chinese-speaking instruction.The design uses the strong communicative approach as the main teaching method and makes adjustments to the teaching method while trying to overcome the disadvantages of the strong communicative approach,further analyses the learning characteristics of online one-on-one Chines-speaking learners at the intermediate level,and facilitates the transformation of the teacher’s role to that of a trainer.The method can help one-on-one spoken Chinese learners to improve their practical application of spoken Chinese,as well as further investigate how the strong communicative method can be used to enhance teachers’ teaching effectiveness and promote the development of spoken Chinese teaching and research.This design can enhance the use of the strong communicative method in online one-on-one speaking instruction and provide valuable instructional design and guidance for online one-on-one speaking instruction.
