E-C Translation Of Narrative Journalism With A Correlative Approach-The Translation Report Of Cabin Fever(Excerpt)

Narrative journalism has gained considerable interests due to its important position in American literature.Scholars at home and abroad have been investigating its history,stylistics,and reception for many years.However,the translation of narrative journalism is rarely explored.This report focuses on the Chinese translation of the book Cabin Fever published in 2022.Guided by Peter Newmark’s theory of a correlative approach to translation and through a comparative analysis of draft and final translation,the report discusses how to solve translation difficulties at the levels of word,sentence,and text.Peter Newmark pointed out that the more important the language of the original text,the more closely it should be translated.Narrative journalism is characterized by its documentary nature and literariness.With the aim to keep the documentary nature of the text,specialized words and quotations should be closely translated due to their high importance,while the less important language can be transferred with communicative translation as the main approach.To keep the literariness,translators should not arbitrarily omit rhetorical devices in the original text or interfere with the switching of narrative perspectives.Attention should be paid to the style and cohesive effect of the original language,and degrees of closeness and the range of “taste area”should be well considered.The findings suggest that translators can focus on “the importance of language”,adhere to the principles of accuracy and economy,and apply semantic and communicative translation methods in a flexible way to balance the documentary nature and literariness of the translation.
