A Report On The Translation Of Restoring The Balance:What Wolves Tell Us About Our Relationship With Nature(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Function Plus Loyalty Theory

Science and technical texts contain abundant terminologies and data information,which make such texts rigorous,objective and logical.In addition,English science and technical texts are distinguished by long and difficult sentences with complex structures and various modifying components,aiming to convey professional and accurate information to target readers.When translating such texts,translators should focus on the realization of ultimate purpose of the target text,ensure the successful transmission of information in the source text,and strive to bring target text readers the reading experience similar to that of source text readers.While pursuing the communicative function of the target text,translators should evaluate all the roles involved in translation and coordinate the relationship between the source text author and the target text readers,being loyal to both sides appropriately.With Christiane Nord’s function plus loyalty theory as a guide,this paper takes as an example the English to Chinese translation of excerpts from Restoring the Balance:What Wolves Tell Us about Our Relationship with Nature to explore translation techniques and strategies applicable to translation of English science and technical texts in the fields of zoology and ecology.From the perspective of function,two aspects,namely terminologies and long and difficult sentences,are discussed.Besides,the proper way to handle the translation of graphical information is analyzed.From the perspective of loyalty,this paper focuses on the pursuit of loyalty to target text readers and the source text author.It is found that for such texts,while the accurate transmission of information in the source text is primary,the professionalism and objectivity of the translation should be ensured and target readers’ acceptance effect should be emphasized.In order to achieve these purposes,translators can give priority to domestication rather than foreignization,applying the translation techniques of addition,division,inversion and conversion.In general,translating science and technical texts from English to Chinese requires translators to convey accurate information.The language should be formal and standardized.Hence the translators need to apply various translation strategies.As for the translation of objective information in the source text,attention should be paid to the realization of the communicative function of the target text.Meanwhile,translators should evaluate the ultimate purpose and the readability of the target text,trying to be loyal to both the author and the readers.
