The current textbooks in primary school have failed to meet the needs of requirements put forward by the new curriculum standards.Based on the situation,the case study investigates whether it impact English picture book reading by constructing and applying teaching mode has on learners’ reading skills in a primary school.The teaching mode is focus on text-illustration relationship in picture books reading.Furthermore,the present study also looks into the variations in reading path and oral retelling from the perspective of students.The case study was designed to assign 11 learners to join this course and read nine picture books over an 18-week period.Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were adopted through learners’ reading path and oral retelling,interview and response in class.The result suggests that the reading teaching mode led to improvement in the performance of students’ reading comprehension,especially the performance in oral retelling.Compared to the pre-test,the post-test is more effective in promoting students’ motivation to read,overcoming raw words and widening their graphic information.The case study puts forward an effective instruction mode to read picture books as supplementary teaching materials.
