A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The “Introductory Texts” Of Fir-Flower Tablets

China is a country of poetry.The external translation of classical Chinese poetry contributed largely to the overseas dissemination of Chinese traditional culture,which,under the national development strategy of Chinese culture “going out”,still embraces practical value.At present,the research on the paratext of the anthologies of Chinese poetry translation that contains rich connotations has become a new focus in domestic translation studies.In view of this,Fir-Flower Tablets,an anthology of Chinese poetry translation co-authored by Florence Ayscough and Amy Lowell,has its introductory text selected as the object of this translation practice.The introductory text contains the criteria for the two authors to select poems,their translation strategies,cognitive methods,and evaluation factors of Chinese culture,which will provide an important reference for the external translation of classical poetry.This thesis is a report on the English-Chinese translation of introductory text of Fir-Flower Tablets,based on which the translator will summarize relevant working experiences.Harmonious Integration Translatology,a Chinese native translation theory,is selected as the theoretical guidance for this thesis;Harmonious Integration Translatology finds its root in the concepts of “harmony” and the doctrine of mean in traditional Chinese culture,which highlights the collision and integration of translation subjects and elements.It advocates that the process of translation is the process of meaning being recognized,and emphasizes the aesthetic pursuit of the text while taking the cultural ecology and values of the target language as the guidance,which endows Harmonious Integration Translatology with a high degree of adaptability and feasibility for the translation of texts related to traditional Chinese culture.The translator constructs the theoretical framework of this report from the perspective of “language,culture,and aesthetics” under the horizontal dimension of this theory.In terms of linguistic dimension,the translator selects translation techniques such as amplification,conversion,restructuring,and adding or changing sentence subjects from lexical,syntactic,and textual levels.In terms of cultural dimension,the translator starts with the translation of social culture-loaded words and linguistic culture-loaded words with the use of translation skills such as semantic extension,free translation,and adaptation.In terms of aesthetic dimension,the translator analyzes the poetic style and conducts the optimization of the target language,and modifies the translation by turning cultural images into verses,translation technique of imitation,and the use of four-character structure and rhetorical devices.Under the guidance of Harmonious Integration Translatology,this translation practice has successfully enriched the expression pattern of the translation and making the translation more consistent with the cultural context of the target language.The translation of the introductory text of Fir-Flower Tablets is helpful to enrich the relevant research results of the English translation of Chinese works,and to provide reference for the translation of other texts of the same text type.Besides,this thesis also proves the feasibility of the Harmonious Integration Translatology,which will help enrich its practical application in the translation of literary works.
