At the end of 2019,the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 seriously threatened people’s lives and brought risks and challenges to the development of countries around the world. The source text of this report is excerpted the first chapter of Modeling and Forecasting the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Socio-Economic Development, which mainly describes epidemic prevention measures and tools taken by various countries to stabilize economy during the epidemic. The translation of such a text is of great practical significance as it helps more people, including the public, medical researchers to know relevant information about COVID-19 worldwide and introduces the social-economic development impact brought by the pandemic to economists and other relevant economic practitioners. Before translation,a corpus-based method was adopted for a complete analysis of the source text.It is concluded that the original text, featured by various disciplines,is imbued with long and complex sentences and passive voice sentences with high formality and objectivity, which belongs to the typical social science text. The translator chose the Communicative Translation Theory to guide the translation practice, which is target readers oriented, and focused on the conveying of the meaning of the original text.Following the principles of the theory, the translator analyzed the source text from three aspects, namely vocabulary, sentence and discourse, aiming to generalize some feasible translation methods for social science texts. At the lexical level, substitution, annotation, and idiomatic expressions were adopted to deal with terms and abbreviations.Based on the difference in word choice, static words in English were converted into dynamic words in Chinese;adverbs into adjectives and so on by adopting the method of conversion. For polysemy, based on different fields, the most appropriate meaning was chosen according to the contextual background by looking up authoritative dictionaries. At the syntactic level, the translator focused on how to deal with long and complex sentences and passive voice sentences.Translation methods like restructuring, division and repetition were applied to the translation of long and complex sentences. Methods of conversion were utilized to deal with passive voice sentences in terms of difference between English and Chinese. At the textual level,to achieve semantic coherence and cohesion effects, the translator summarized three translation methods, namely addition, omission and shifting. In the end,it is hoped that this report can provide some reference for relevant translation practice.
