This is a report on the translation of The Translation of Realia and Irrealia in Game Localization: Culture-Specificity between Realism and Fictionality by Silvia Pettini,of which the excerpts of Chapter 3(Culture-Specificity in Video Games: The Interface between the Realism and Fictionality)is the source text(ST).The ST examines the concept of realism and fictionality and methodological issues in game translation, and introduces the inclusion of three selected games with their game worlds in the corpus. The target text(TT)offers a new perspective of game localization to the target readers, and helps improve game translators’ skills. The ST,of academic nature, features lots of terminology, complex sentences and markers of cohesion, which pose challenges to the translator, such as the translation of terminology, attributive clauses, appositives and anaphoric terms.Based on the linguistic features, this report, guided by adaptation theory, discussed how the contextual correlates and structural objects of adaptability help the translation at the lexical, syntactic, and textual levels. With these two investigation angles, the translator applied literal translation, restructuring, division, addition and explicitation to address the translation problems. From the translation practice, the translator realizes that adaptation theory can also guide the translation of academic works. In addition,it is not necessary for translators to stick to the forms of STs;however, translators should take their contexts into consideration, which produces idiomatic TTs,and conveys original information at the same time.
