Causes Of Disfluencies Chinese To Spanish Consecutive Interpreting And Coping Strategies

The importance of fluency in interpreting is agreed upon by the interpreting community both nationally and internationally.Fluency is the fourth most important criterion of AIIC in judging the quality of professional interpretation,also it is one of the three classic criteria in interpreting established by Chinese scholars,the other two of them are accuracy and speediness,both of which shows that fluency is an element that cannot be ignored in interpreting while conveying the speaker’s words.And the discontinuity or disfluency in the flow of a speech may cause interruptions in receiving and understanding the message for clients.The concept of disfluency is derived from spoken language,and the investigation of disfluencies in interpreting borrows from the study of disfluencies as they share the similarity of content-processing.However,the mechanisms of content-processing from interpreting activities are more complex,because it includes bilingual processing,cognitive manipulation and processing,and information processing,and interpreters may also be psychologically stressed due to the high intensity interpretation work,so the perspectives of the analysis may differ.This is a case study based on the mock conference of closing speech in Wuhan Special Summit of 2020 Yabuli China Entrepreneur’s Forum.The author analyses the causes and proposes strategies to cope with them.The author first establishes a table to classify the category of disfluencies and the frequency of each.By transcribing and comparing the source language and the translated language,combining the reflections on this interpretation case,the author sums up several causes that lead to disfluencies,which are the ability to analyze the logic of the source language is insufficient,the deficiency of taking notes,the ability of planning interpretation is insufficient,the speed of articulating prepositions and articles is too fast,and the self-monitoring is insufficient.Based on this,the author proposes the corresponding strategies,which are to enhance the ability to manipulate logic,improve the efficiency of note-taking in the phase of understanding the source language,and to develop good sentence breaking habits and enhance public speech ability in the stage of interpretation outputting.The author uses this case to investigate the causes of disfluencies in Chinese-Spanish consecutive interpreting and proposes corresponding strategies,hoping to provide reference to interpreters with similar problems and to add to the corpus of research on disfluencies in Chinese-Spanish consecutive interpreting.
