A Report On Simulated Simultaneous Interpretation Of The UN World Oceans Day 2022

This is a report on the simulated English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting of “the UN World Oceans Day 2022”.On June 8,2022,in celebration of the 14 th World Oceans Day,the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations,together with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global,co-organized the 2022 World Oceans Day under the theme “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean” to mobilize the world’s people to raise awareness and protect the oceans.The event invited maritime experts and institutional partners from various industries to deliver speeches.With distinct features in the maritime sector,the conference provided ample material for the practice of interpretation and served as the basis for this report.This report is theoretically supported by Gile’s Interpretation Comprehension Equation(GICE).Gile believes that to achieve full comprehension of the source language in interpretation,it’s necessary to improve knowledge of language,extra-linguistic knowledge and analysis.The formula elaborates on the factors influencing interpretation comprehension and helps the author categorize and analyze listening and discernment issues in complex language materials,aiming to reduce the frequency of listening and discernment obstacles and provide valuable insights for improving interpretation quality.Major findings are as follows.For the knowledge of language barriers,strategies such as omission and paraphrasing can be used to overcome vocabulary obstacles,while for complex sentence structures,Chunking strategy and amplification can promote fluent translation output.In dealing with the extra-linguistic knowledge barrier,fuzzy interpreting can be used with amplification to complete the information.In terms of analytical barrier,it is necessary to combine one’s own cognition with contextual logic for analysis in order to achieve logical coherence.
