A Practice Report On The Translation Of Science Fiction The Huger Games (Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Variational Translation Theory

With the development of science and technology,science fiction has received more and more attention for its unique foresight.And people’s love for science fiction is increasing day by day.At present,the total number of science fictions in foreign countries is larger than that in China,so there is much demand of translation of science fictions from English to Chinese.Under the guidance of Variational Translation Theory,this translation practice report selects 10,000 words from Susan Collins’ science fiction The Hunger Games for translation.Science fiction is a form of popular fiction,whose reading group is usually general readers who read it primarily for pleasure and amusement.Under the guidance of Variational Translation Theory,translator can reshape the original text in terms of content and form,and process a translation that is suitable for the characteristics,reading needs and reading habits of target readers.Translation variation gives the translator great space for recreation,so that the translator can give full play to the subjective initiative and carry out the science fiction translation in a targeted way.The special effects of translation can highlight the characteristics of science fictions—scientificity,literariness and popularity.By further combining audience analysis and translation theory,I find that the following translation strategies can effectively solve the problems in the translation process:(1)Adopting the two major translation strategies of "addition" and "deletion" can make the translation more vivid,concise and easy to understand;(2)Adopting the two major translation strategies of "combination" and "adaptation" can make the logic of the translation more clear,so as to reduce the reading burden of the target readers.Some appropriate translation strategies are summarized in this practice which are applicable to science fiction on the basis of previous studies.This paper demonstrates the feasibility of Variational Translation Theory to guide science fiction translation.The special effects of translation variation coincide with the characteristics of science fictions,which provides the possibility for the application of Variational Translation Theory in science fictions translation.
