A Report On C-E Web Translation From The Perspective Of Variational Translation Theory

In recent years,thanks to rising international status and strong economic growth,China’s education industry is thriving amid fierce competition.The English website of a Chinese education group is one of the important means for it to establish the company’s image,publicize its business and promote its products.Based on this,it is especially important to improve the translation quality of its English website to build a good English outreach portal platform and enhance its corporate image.Therefore,the importance of improving the translation quality of C-E websites is self-evident.This thesis,based on the present author’s C-E translation practice of the official website of CCNU Education Group,aims to address translation problems that popped up throughout the translation process by using Variational Translation Theory(VTT)as the theoretical basis,and discuss what translation techniques may be adopted to solve them.It first introduces the author’s translation processes and expounds the Variational Translation Theory as well as its applicability to website translation.Then the body part of the thesis,based on a thorough analysis of the features and functions of the source texts,summarizes four typical difficulties the author encountered in the translation process,namely,the translation of slogans and culture-loaded terms,the handling of specific textual differences between English and Chinese websites,the handling of information redundancy,and the translation of certain texts with Chinese characteristics.Then on the basis of Variational Translation Theory,a discussion is made on the effective ways to cope with these difficulties.The study finds that under the guidance of VTT,the translator can use the variational translation technique of “narrating” to translate slogans and culture-loaded terms,“editing” to deal with some sentences with Chinese characteristics,“deleting” to deal with redundant texts,and “altering” to deal with texts with Chinese characteristics on websites.This paper can provide reference for the website translation of companies and institutions so that their translations can meet the reading needs of specific readers and play the role of improving the quality of website translation and ensuring the efficiency of website translation...
