In this thesis, we designed and synthesized some novel compounds.We characterized them with diversified characterization and the properties of these oligomers were studied. We discussed potential application of them. We make a summary of the work which was listed in the following text.The new oligoaniline has well defined structure with a shape just like a dumbbell. Combined with its reversible electrochemical property it may be useful in molecular electronics as a model compound for molecular electronic switch.(1) In this work we report our first try for the synthesis of a novel "dumbbell-shaped" aniline oligomer at nanometer length scale under ambient conditions using a new rigid aromatic amine as starting material through the simple oxidative coupling reaction. The structure of the compound was characterized by IR, MALDI-TOF-MS, NMR, and elemental analysis. The reversible redox property was founded. A possible redox process was proposed. With well defined structure and reversible electrochemical property, this type of oligoaniline could be used as a model compound of molecular electronic switch under the STM or AFM.(2) We design and synthesized a novel photoactive azo compound and characterized by GPC, IR, MALDI-TOF-MS, and elemental analysis. The absorption spectrum change of the "dumbbell-shaped" oligoaniline after it was exposed under high-octane UV was monitored continuously by UV spectra. The prime result of the experiment shows that the novel azo compound exhibits the photoactive property. It may be seen as a kins of photoactive functional organic nanomaterial.(3) Two kinds of monodispersed carbamodithioic acid end capped oligoaniline were successfully synthesized through a convenient method, Both compounds were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, MALDI mass spectra and elemental analysis. The selfassembled film of (4-(4-(4-(phenylamino)phenylamino)phenylamino)phenyl) carbamodithioic acid on the Au surface has been studied by XPS. It was found that the novel oligoaniline can assemble with Au or Ag just like has a plug on its end, maybe it can be used as one of molecular wires due to it still has the electricalactive property similar with the oligoaniline.
