Schiff base and its complexes are widely used in the fields of biology, catalysis and material etc. Thus, studies on the synthesis of novel Schiff base complexes and their properties and application are significant to the development of coordination chemistry.Six novel Schiff base ligands which are derived from taurine- o-vanillin(HTOvK), taurine-salicylaldehyde (HTSalK), taurine-5-chloro-2-hydroxy-3- methylformaldehyde (HTCHK),taurine-2,3,4-tri-hydroxybenzoicformaldehyde(HTTHK), taurine-thiophene- 2- formaldehyde (HT2THK), taurine-2-hydroxy- 1-naphthaldehyde (HTNAK) have been prepared, and sixty-nine coordination compounds of lanthanide nitrates or transition metal with these ligands have been synthesized. Some hetero atom-containing ligands such as 2,2 , -dipyridyl, 1,10-phenanthroline, 8-hydroxyquinoline, 2-Aminopyridine are also involved due to their planar conjugation configuration, which may improve the matching performance of the complexes with the active sites on acceptor at the aspects of steric and electronic effects. Complexes modified by these ligands may be beneficial to their bioactivities. All these complexes are first reported. These ligands and complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy, TG-DTG analysis, X-ray powder diffraction , X-ray crystal diffraction and molar conductance analysis, and the suggested structures of the complexes were concluded. Bioactivities of the novel complexes including antibacterial activity, the scavenging activity to O2-·and intercalation action with DNA have been studied. The compositions of the metal complexes with Schiff base ligands from taurine-o-vanillin (HTOvK) are confirmed to be [MTSalL2]·nH2O (M= Mn, Ni, Co, n=2; M=Cu, n=3);[Ln( HTSal)L2 (NO3 ) 2 ]·2H2O( L n = La , Eu , Pr, N d, Tb) ; [Ln(TSal)L1 (NO3)]·2H2O(Ln=Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb); [Ln(HTSal)2](NO3)·2H2O (Ln=La,Pr,Nd); [Ln(HTSal)L3(NO+3)](NO+3)·2H2O (Ln =La, Eu, Pr), respectively. The compositions of the metal complexes with Schiff base ligands from...
